MEETING OF PRESIDENT XHAFERI WITH H.E. DANIEL JOSEPH EMERY

The President of the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia, Talat Xhaferi, tody had a meeting with the newly appointed Ambassador of Australia to the Republic of North Macedonia resident in Belgrade, H.E. Daniel Joseph Emery.

Wishing him a cordial welcome, President Xhaferi expressed hope that the mutual cooperation which due to the pandemic cannot be realized with meetings with the physical presence of representatives of the two countries, will begin to intensify in the future. At the same time, he informed the Ambassador about the interest of the MPs of the Assembly for closer cooperation with their Australian counterparts, expressed through the continuous establishment of the Parliamentary Group for Cooperation with the Parliament of Australia in each parliamentary term, with the expectation that a separate network for cooperation with our country will be re – established in their parliament, as it was in the past, given the fact that currently the country is in the network for cooperation with the countries of Southeast Europe.

Ambassador Emery thanked for the opportunity to hold the meeting, assessing the mutual relations as close, warm and friendly, with an important element in the parliamentary diplomacy and inter-parliamentary cooperation. He expressed full Australian support for the realization of the strategic goals of the Republic of North Macedonia – the current NATO membership and the achieved progress in obtaining a date for EU membership negotiations, with the expectation that the current obstacles will be overcome soon. He assessed the role of the Assembly and the MPs during the negotiations for EU membership as crucial, especially due to the scope of the required legislation that needs to go through the parliamentary procedure during this process.

Both interlocutors concluded that the cooperation has the potential for greater scope in the field of defense, tourism and education and welcomed the current cooperation within the framework of international organizations. At the same time, they agreed that the Diaspora, as one of the largest in Australia, could serve as a bridge for stronger ties between the two countries.
