MEETING OF PRESIDENT VELJANOSKI WITH MR. ŠTEFAN FÜLE, EUROPEAN COMMISSIONER FOR ENLARGEMENT AND EUROPEAN NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICY

Expressing satisfaction from the meeting, the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia Mr. Trajko Veljanoski said that the Assembly continues to demonstrate institutional capacity to respond to all the obligations deriving from the High Level Accession Dialogue with the European Union.

President Veljanoski pointed out that, as an institution, the Parliament has always had and will continue to have the capacity to resolve all the issues and differences in a democratic manner.

President Veljanoski also informed Commissioner Füle about the work of the Assembly since his last visit to Macedonia in March this year. Since then the Assembly has adopted 145 laws, 33 of which are ratifications of agreements and 17 are laws from the so-called “roadmap”. Mr. Veljanoski said that 25 items on the agenda of the Assembly have been proposed by the opposition, which is confirmation of its intensive work and responsibility in the process of European integration of the Republic of Macedonia, adding that all the political parties represented in the Assembly have a consensus when it comes to the laws from the European agenda. Confirmation for this is the recent adoption of the Law on Monitoring Electronic Communications with two-thirds majority.

He also said that at the end of last week the Government has submitted to the Assembly several laws deriving from the so-called “roadmap” which he will put on the agenda of the next plenary session planned for 25 September. President Veljanoski expressed his expectations that the Progress Report will again, for the fourth time in succession, assess positively the work of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia and that the country will receive the date for opening the accession negotiations.

Expressing appreciation for the meeting, Commissioner Štefan Füle said that he values highly the work of the Assembly and the role and commitment of President Veljanoski in the realization of the European agenda of the Republic of Macedonia. Mr. Füle added that the work of the Assembly will have a prominent place in the Progress Report because the Parliament is a very important institution for the European Commission and for all the EU member states.
